Nordic Energy Link inaugurated

The importance of the project lies, primarily, in the improved security of electricity supply in the Baltic countries. The new link allows for electricity trade and provides an alternative electricity purchase channel to cover potential deficits in generating capacity.

The 100-kilometre high-voltage trunk has been designed, built and installed by the Swedish power and automation group ABB. The technology used in the project eliminates electromagnetic fields. The submarine cable’s carrying capacity is 350 megawatts.

The link is owned by the Baltic energy utilities, Eesti Energia, Latvenergo and Lietuvos Energija, and two Finnish energy companies, Pohjolan Voima and Helsingin Energia.
