NIB funds the refurbishment of Biomedicum building in Helsinki

NIB has signed a EUR 8 million loan agreement with Kiinteistö Oy Biomedicum Helsinki to finance the refurbishment of a key research and education facility in Finland. The loan has a maturity of 10.5 years.

Originally constructed in 2001, the Biomedicum 1 building in Helsinki’s Meilahti medical campus is undergoing a major renovation to upgrade the facility to modern standards. The project, which began in 2023, is expected to be completed in spring 2026. Once finalised, the building’s energy consumption is projected to decrease by 60%.

A key factor of the refurbishment is the implementation of an advanced energy recycling system, expected to significantly reduce dependence on district heating. Upgrades include the installation of heat recovery systems and both air- and water-based heat pumps, enabling the building to operate largely independently from external heating sources. All heating, cooling, and automation systems will be completely modernised. The renovation is being conducted in phases, allowing the building to remain in continuous use throughout the works.

Kiinteistö Oy Biomedicum Helsinki is a mutual real estate company that owns the buildings of the research and educational facility located in Meilahti, Helsinki. The company is responsible for executing construction projects, building maintenance, and real estate management. Its principal shareholders are the University of Helsinki Funds, the Joint Authority for the Hospital District of Helsinki, and the City of Helsinki.

NIB is an international financial institution owned by eight member countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden.
