NIB finances wastewater treatment upgrade in central Sweden
Stockholm Archipelago
NIB and the town of Norrtälje have signed a loan agreement, totalling SEK 150 million (EUR 17 million), for upgrading a wastewater treatment plant and expanding the sewerage service in this municipality located in central Sweden.
The rehabilitation and expansion will increase the number of individual connections to the Norrtälje wastewater treatment from 1,900 to 15,000, including single-household solutions and very small local wastewater treatment plants. The upgrade will also make it possible to process wastewater from passenger ships visiting the nearby seaport of Kapellskär.
“Efficient wastewater treatment is an absolutely necessary and very effective measure the Baltic Sea rim nations need to undertake in order to stop damaging the marine environment. This NIB-financed project addresses the pressing issue of insufficient wastewater treatment capacity in areas with growing population”, says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.
The design of the wastewater treatment plant will allow the following treatment levels: BOD7 10 mg/l, Ntot 15 mg/l and Ptot 0.3 mg/l. These targets are in line with the recommendations developed by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) for wastewater treatment plants serving between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The annual load reduction is expected to be around 50 tonnes of nitrogen and two tonnes of phosphorus.
Situated in the Stockholm archipelago, the municipality of Norrtälje has a population of approximately 57,000 and is a popular location for a growing number of seasonal residents who have vacation homes in the area.
