NIB has signed a 25-year loan agreement of SEK 151 million (EUR 16 million) with Swedish wastewater service provider Käppalaförbundet for the upgrade of its sewage treatment plant in Lidingö, northern Stockholm.

The loan will finance the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant with a high-rate clarification process for overflow on site of the existing Käppala sewage processing facility in northern Stockholm, and the installation of a new digester to increase the biogas production capacity of the plant.

The Käppala plant is Sweden’s third largest wastewater treatment facility, and processes up to 55 million m3 of sewage per year. Further, Käppalaförbundet produces high-quality sludge for use as fertilizer, and currently has two operating digesters for biogas production. The digesters have a combined capacity of 6.6 million m3 of gas per year.

Due to the anticipated population growth in the region, the construction of the new treatment plant will allow the Käppala facility to treat increasing volumes of effluent water and avoid overflow problems.

“Secure wastewater treatment is essential for reducing the stress a growing population imposes on the environment. The project makes efficient use of already existing infrastructure and will help Käppalaförbundet to meet regulatory standards in a sustainable way”, says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.

The increase in demand for biogas and the risk of overload in peak times make the installation of a third digester for processing organic matter from wastewater necessary. This will increase the biogas production capacity of the plant by 50%.

Both the new high-rate clarification process treatment plant and the new digester will be operational as of 2017.

Käppalaförbundet is a federation of eleven municipalities located north and east of Stockholm, first established in 1957. Today, the company treats wastewater from over 600,000 inhabitants.
