Project
The loan has been provided for Tønder Biogas A/S to fund the construction and operation of a biogas facility in Tønder, Denmark.
The first stages of construction began in 2021, and the plant will become one of the largest biogas production facilities in Denmark, contributing to the country’s rapidly increasing biogas output, which has grown five- or sixfold since 2012.
Tønder Biogas A/S, expected to be commercially operational by the first half of 2025, will be a gas-to-grid biogas facility larger than a typical biogas plant, with the capacity to produce more than 41 million Nm3 (equivalent to 455 GWh) of methane annually.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
The plant will produce biomethane from 930,000 tonnes of biomass, primarily manure and industrial waste, without using energy crops. All the produced biogas will be injected into the natural gas grid. Additionally, more than 800,000 tonnes of digestate will be produced for use as fertiliser by farmers.
By replacing natural gas with this volume of biomethane, more than 90,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions can be avoided. In addition, more than 48,000 tonnes of liquid CO2 will be captured and sold to power-to-x operators.

Sustainability summary
The project is essential to mitigate climate change, and no significant climate risks to the project have been identified. The master and local plans, EIA report with approval, environmental permit, and construction permits are all valid.
