The loan has been provided to finance Novozymes’ research and development activities in 2016–2018, which are intended to advance the company’s existing biotechnology portfolio and to open up new business platforms.
These new business platforms include the use of enzyme solutions in animal health and nutrition, biomass conversion technology and the generation of environmentally efficient fertilizers for bio-agriculture.
Novozymes’ main R&D centre is located in Denmark. The company has other research facilities in the USA, China and India.
Novozymes A/S is a global biotechnology company that produces a wide range of industrial enzymes and microorganisms. The company holds more than 7,000 patents and is headquartered in Bagsvaerd, Denmark.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Novozymes is one of the most R&D-intensive companies in the Nordics and reinvests approximately 13-14% of its revenue into research every year. Over 20% of the company’s 6,500 employees work within R&D. Novozymes is part of Denmark’s biotech cluster, and its R&D activities are likely to have positive spill-over effects. The company has research collaboration agreements with several Danish universities.
Novozymes aims to replace pesticides and other traditional chemical-based fertilisers with more sustainable solutions in order to reduce the negative environmental impact of farming. Additionally, its animal health and nutrition programme intends to apply enzyme solution in the production of animal feed to reduce the use of phosphate. Further, its biomass conversion programme is expected to contribute to the development of cellulosic biofuels.
Sustainability summary
The R&D projects are assessed not to have significant negative environmental impacts.
