Project
The 20-year-maturity loan totalling EUR 50 million has been provided for a new gasification-based waste-to-energy plant. The power plant, located in the City of Lahti in southern Finland, will be a combined heat and power plant with an estimated production capacity of 50 MW of electricity and 90 MW of district heat. The yearly consumption of waste will be some 250,000 tonnes.
The project is classified by the EU as a demo project for innovative biomass and waste combustion plants for energy recovery and renewable electricity production. The gasification will take place in two parallel lines that consist of gasifiers, coolers and cleaners, and it will use pre-sorted waste as its primary energy source. This is the first time this type of process will be used commercially in Finland.
Lahti Energia is fully owned by the City of Lahti. Total annual production of electricity amounts to some 1,100 GWh and district heating to some 1,200 GWh per year.
Sustainability summary
The key environmental issues of the new plant are waste management, airborne emission noise and possible generation of hazardous waste. The company has an environmental management system certified in accordance with ISO 14001.
