The loan has been provided for the Kemira Oyj to finance the company’s research and development (R&D) investments during 2023-2026.
Kemira Oyj is a global chemicals company serving customers in water-intensive industries worldwide. The NIB financing is intended for Kemira’s R&D expenditures focused on developing innovative solutions helping the pulp and paper industry as well as water treatment and energy industries operate more efficiently and sustainably.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Productivity:
Kemira’s R&D focuses on developing solutions for the pulp and paper industry, as well as water treatment products for municipalities and industries, and polymers for the shale oil and gas sector.
Kemira’s involvement in forest and heavy industry clusters supports collaboration with Nordic companies, universities, and research institutes, likely leading to broader social returns from its R&D investments. Being part of a well-established industry cluster is expected to generate social benefits, extending beyond the company’s direct innovations.
The move to a new research center in Espoo might further boost Kemira’s R&D capabilities and collaborative opportunities. This strategic relocation promises enhanced facilities and greater potential for partnerships, contributing to Kemira’s commitment to innovation, industry collaboration, and societal contributions through its R&D activities.
Environment:
Kemira’s R&D efforts are focused on four key environmental segments: efficient use of scarce resources, development of biobased chemicals, adaptation to tighter environmental regulations, and climate change mitigation.
A promising project in the domain of scarce resources is the enhancement of phosphorus removal from sewage sludge, with the aim of recycling phosphorus for use as a fertiliser.
