Project
The loan has been provided for the implementation of a global R&D programme in the period of 2013–2015. The programme will be focused on the development of innovative products as well as more efficient production processes for the cement and mineral industries. The research is to be allocated to the following areas: cement products, CO2 and energy efficiency, harmful gaseous emissions, fuels and combustion, materials and wear processes. An important part of the R&D programme will be aimed at the development of less environmentally invasive technologies to reduce emissions and energy consumption. The total budget of the programme amounts to EUR 260 million.
FLSmidth is a global supplier of services and equipment for the minerals and cement industries. Founded 130 years ago in Denmark, the company now focuses on engineering and design and outsources most of its production.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
The project supports member-area knowledge accumulation and dissemination in various research fields. Through intangible capital investment, the project should lead to product innovation and patents with a focus on improving reliability and efficiency. Research spending in Denmark is roughly one-third of the project. Product development, located near major customers, and investments in machinery, equipment and facilities account for the rest.
Sustainability summary
The R&D programme has several environmentally positive specific goals. The positive environmental impacts are indirect and derived from energy efficiency and reduced emissions to air through the implementation of new techniques in cement production. These effects occur only when the new products are purchased and implemented by customers.
