This loan contributes to climate change mitigation: 100%

Project

The loan has been provided for Eskilstuna Biogas AB to co-finance the construction of a biogas production facility near Eskilstuna, Sweden. The transaction is eligible under NIB’s InvestEU Framework Operation Green Mobility and Transport, specifically the production or processing of biogas based on advanced feedstock. The framework is approved by the InvestEU Investment Committee.

Eskilstuna Biogas was founded with the aim of constructing and operating a biogas facility in Eskilstuna, Sweden. The plant is expected to start operations in the first half of 2027. The plant will have a capacity of 150,000 tonnes of feedstock per year and an estimated production capacity of up to 5,450 tonnes of liquefied biogas (LBG). The company sources feedstock from local farms and the municipality and returns the digestate (digested sludge) to the farmers as fertiliser.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

The project will add value to the municipality’s operations and agricultural value chain. By directing waste fractions such as food slurry, which Eskilstuna currently cannot manage, to the biogas facility instead of biogas production in the Stockholm area, the Eskilstuna municipality will increase its waste handling operations’ logistical efficiency. The LBG the facility produces can replace diesel and LNG (liquefied natural gas) as energy sources, avoiding almost 37,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Impacts indicators in relation to the investments:

  • Capex, EUR million
  • Biogas production annually, GWh
  • Feedstock split between manure and waste slurry, tonnes per year
  • Production output, GWh per year
  • Liquefied CO2, tonnes per year.

Sustainability summary

The project is essential to mitigate climate change and close material loops.

The required environmental permit for the production facility has been granted.

Sustainability proofing has been conducted in accordance with the InvestEU Fund requirements, and a summary can be found here.
