Project
The loan has been provided for the acquisition of a new Regina train manufactured by Bombardier to further increase transport capacity in the Värmland county in western Sweden. The new train will add passenger capacity by around 170 seats.
NIB took part in a bidding process for the financing of new and used train-sets within Transitio’s investment programme totalling SEK 650 million for the period 2014–2015 and was chosen to finance three new train-sets for the counties of Värmland and Västerbotten.
Founded in 1999, AB Transitio is a Swedish private limited liability company, owned by regional public transport authorities and county councils. The company coordinates public transport authorities’ procurement of rolling stock.
Fulfilment of NIB's mandate
Competitiveness: The project is expected to promote some cluster effects, by improving the quality and availability of the domestic passenger railway service, contributing to local and regional integration. High quality public transportation often provides numerous benefits such as congestion reductions, shorter travel time, reduced accident risk, improved mobility for non-drivers and energy conservation.
Environment: The major environmental advantage with this project is in transferring passengers from road traffic to the railway. Railway transportation causes considerably lower emissions per person-kilometre in comparison to road travel.
Sustainability summary
The purchase or transfer of the ownership of trains has very limited negative environmental impacts.
