Project

The loan has been provided for the acquisition of 33 new double-decker trains for regional traffic in Mälardalen, central Sweden. The project is estimated at SEK 3.5 billion in 2016–2022.

The Mälardalen region represents 33% of Sweden’s population and 44% of the country’s GDP. By 2050, the population of the region is estimated to increase by another million inhabitants. In 2013, the local passenger railway operator Mälardalstrafik AB and its six owner counties agreed to expand traffic capacity in the region. The 33 trains of the type DOSTO will be provided by Swiss railway vehicle manufacturer Stadler starting from 2019, and will be leased via AB Transitio to be used on four different railway lines in Mälardalen. Transitio’s framework agreement facilitates the possible acquisition of more trains for the extension of traffic to other routes.

Founded in 1999, AB Transitio is a Swedish private limited liability company owned by regional public transport authorities and county councils. The company coordinates procurement and fleet-management of rolling stock for public transport authorities.

Fulfilment of NIB's mandate

The new commuter trains will provide a number of direct benefits, such as improved capacity and reduced traveling time. The demand for public transport is likely to increase steadily in the coming decades as the region’s population is growing continuously. Over the next years, the number of departures is expected to increase by 30% and the number of passenger seats by 3,000. Enlarging commuting areas and integrating municipalities will increase the mobility of labour and have a positive impact on the labour market. It will enhance human, social and economic interaction, which is especially important for the future development of the counties’ peripheral areas.

The improvement of railway services is expected to allow commuters to choose public transport over their private cars and thereby to alleviate road traffic congestion.

Sustainability summary

No significant potential for negative environmental impact has been identified in connected to the project.
