Project summary

Stockholm Exergi is an energy company providing energy to the Stockholm region through district heating networks. Stockholm Exergi provides heating for more than 800,000 people in and around Stockholm and is the largest provider of district heating in the Stockholm region. Ninety-nine per cent of Stockholm Exergi’s district heating system is based on renewable or recycled energy. The company is 50% owned by the City of Stockholm and 50% by Ankhiale, a consortium of European institutional investors.

Stockholm Exergi aims to construct and operate a facility to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the KKV8 bio-cogeneration plant at the Värtaverket energy plant (the boiler in KVV8 has a 400MW installed capacity, with an output of 365MW in 2022). The company will use hot potassium carbonate technology to capture the CO2 from the flue gas post combustion. The construction will also include facilities for compression, liquefaction and temporary storage within the company’s premises. To facilitate the temporary storage, an existing quay will be reconstructed.

When finalised, the project is designed to provide an annual reduction of 800,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2, contributing to the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere.

The project belongs to Category A according to NIB’s Sustainability Policy, and a public disclosure will therefore be conducted before the Bank decides on financing the project. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been developed for the project, and the necessary environmental permit has been granted.
